Fishing Books
Back To Home Page
My very first book about fishing which I think I read in 1958 ! This was the start of my life long interest in all things angling related.
Books like this one The Art of Angling printed in 1957 are a great pleasure to read. The illustrations are wonderful, and are a timely reminder of where my fishing started and the adventures I had.
This is another old book that I have the pleasure of owning. It reminds me so much
of the days I spent on match fishing trips with the local angling clubs.

These were very happy days spent in the company of some real "characters". I have seen pike rods made from billiard cues, float rods made
from tank aerials, seat box's constructed from every
conceivable material that you could imagine.

I once had the great pleasure of meeting this Great Man BILLY LANE   on a days outing to the river Swale at Cundal Hall.
He absolutely amazed me with his angling skill's and knowledge and taught me how to find and fish the "Dock grub".
I got lots of good information out of this great little book. I think the most interesting
of which was how to convert your ABU 506 closed face reel to backwind!

This picture of John Carding watching Ray Mumford was probably my first
sight of serious pole fishing.

This book had chapters on most methods, but the really interesting thing was the emergence of pole fishing
on all types of venue. They were still only referring to using fibreglass poles and whips but there was still a tremendous difference in quality.
Some people had resorted to buying directly from France and Italy to try and gain a lead in the quality of tackle. You had to search very hard to find "continental" tackle in this country.
Here is where my pole fishing started! This little book along with a Garbolino fibreglass pole changed my fishing completely.
By the time this book was published in 1987 I had moved up to carbon poles.
The first of these being a 9 metre Garbolino The price at this time really did dictate the quality you purchased.
To buy a top class carbon pole you needed to get a second mortgage?
This was an excellent book covering all aspects of match fishing. By now the pole had been accepted as a match winning method.
Dickie Carr was once again demonstrating his skills with the pole.
This book inspired me to look at my fishing in a different way. These were tales of
really serious anglers in pursuit of their own dream fish. They did not have to be monsters to be specimens as this rig for winter dace fishing shows.
This is the sort of set up that I started my carp fishing days with. Glass fibre rods and Mitchel 410 reels.
I bought this book   when I was on holiday with the family and read it cover to cover.
I am still amazed by how much I learned from such an interesting book. It transformed my carp fishing and the ways in which I thought of carp.
When this book arrived my carp fishing days were at their peak. Things seemed to be getting
very serious, to me it signalled the commercial elements creeping in and in my view the start of "pricing people out". Enough of me ! good book all the same.
